Welcome to Tipton St John
Tipton St John is a Village of
around 350 inhabitants situated in the beautiful Otter Valley
between Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary in East Devon, England.
Between 1874 and 1967 Tipton St John formed an integral part of
the rail network with a bustling station on the mainline carrying
passengers from London and the Midlands to the popular health
resorts of Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth.
The line from Exeter to Sidmouth was owned by the Sidmouth Railway
Company and enjoyed healthy passenger figures in the Summer Season
well into the 1950's. Rationalisation in the 1960's saw the
closure of the line on 4th March 1967.
Tipton is now a healthy small
village with its' own pub, shops, school, garage, church and sports and leisure facilities. There are many community
activities which go on through out the year and the local village
newspaper "The Tipton Times", has been published since
the 1960's.
This site is designed to reflect
the history and activities of Tipton St John and keep people who have an interest in the village in touch.
